Can you imagine a man saying to you to just save his wife but let his baby die because he cannot afford $70 for a C-section? Or having a family insist that they take their premature baby home to die when he only needs a week or two of oxygen and tube feedings to live? Why? Because they have run out of money and can no longer afford the $3 per day that the bed and oxygen costs. In Mali where, according to the United Nations, 77% live on less than $2 a day, these are common occurrences.
Fortunately when these cases come up we have a benevolent fund to help. Our Malian chaplains work with the families to determine family income and possessions to help them find ways to pay. Then, as needed, they come alongside the patient’s family with either a gift in Jesus name or a loan to allow them to receive the lifesaving treatment. Gifts to this fund allow us to be able to give this help and to do it in the most effective way possible.
