Anesthesia Machines Print E-mail
2 Needed Cost : $12,500 each

The Koutiala Women's and Children's Hospital usually makes do with donated equipment and God has provided for our needs in an incredible way. But there have been a few items that we have not been able to find and these have had to be purchased. One crucial item is the Anesthesia Device that we use for surgery. There are only a few machines in existence that can run on the type of low-pressure oxygen that we have available to us. (We have explored the possibility of filling our own oxygen bottles but this would cost as much as the machines we need.)

Anesthesia machine

When we go from one O/R to four in 2010, we will need at least two more machines. We would like to get the same model that we currently use as it is very reliable and easy to use. This is important for us here as we are constantly training new staff. So between now and the end of 2010 we need to have these machines purchased and delivered to the Hospital.

Value of one child

As we turn off her baby’s oxygen, Isa’s mother runs outside so that she can hide her tears. Isa’s dad sits stone-faced. Knowing his baby will die within an hour, he says that they are leaving regardless of what we say.  They have no more money for medical care.

Sadly this is life in Mali, having to let your child die due to lack of funds, even when the price of oxygen is just $2 per day, hospital care an additional $1. Can you even imagine having to put a monetary value on your child's life?!
